Performance at 'Japonismes 2018', Paris
Nakamura Shidō and Nakamura Shichinosuke will each make their debut at the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris this September.
The performances will be held as one of the cultural events known as 'Japonismes 2018' in Paris, France, which will showcase Japanese culture on the world stage. 'Japonismes 2018' marks the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and France.
Nakamura Shidō and Nakamura Shichinosuke expressed their enthusiasm for the performances at a press conference held on April 26th.
'I think transmitting the uniquely Japanese art of kabuki to the world is our mission.' Shidō said. He continued, 'the dual aim of protecting the tradition that our ancestors and predecessors handed down to us, as well as bringing about innovation, is the most important thing.'.
Shichinosuke, whose grandfather (Nakamura Kanzaburō XVII) was the first to perform kabuki in France, expressed his honest feelings, 'I am honored and happy to be chosen to perform on this very special occasion, but at the same time, I also feel the pressure of passing on what our ancestors handed down to us. I hope we can spread the kabuki we love to the audience in France'.
Eleven years since the last full-scale Kabuki tour to France, the performances by Nakamura Shidō and Nakamura Shichinosuke will highlight the aesthetics and refined stylization highly unique to traditional Kabuki. Please be sure not to miss this special occasion!
