Minamiza Theatre (at KYOTO) Theatre Information

This month, a special performance by Bandō Tamasaburō will take place at the Minamiza Theatre. The program begins with a ‘Stage Announcement’ (Kōjō) by Tamasaburō. This is followed by a masterpiece of Nagauta music that beautifully depicts the scenery and emotions of deep autumn. Finally, a dance drama based on the legend of a famous poet-priest and a courtesan will be performed. Please enjoy the elegant and fantastic world presented by Tamasaburō.

STORY :

A woman stands in a field where autumn flowers are in full bloom as the season deepens. While gazing at the charming scenery, she becomes lost in thought and reflects on her own love, recalling an ancient legend about a goddess. She dances to celebrate the joys of the four seasons, which remain unchanged through the ages. Enjoy this seasonal dance set to a famous Nagauta melody.

['The Autumn Rain and Saigyō']

STORY :

This dance drama depicts an encounter between the famous poet-priest Saigyō and a courtesan in the village of Eguchi. When Saigyō seeks shelter from a sudden autumn shower, the courtesan reveals her true nature as the Bodhisattva Fugen. This marks Tamasaburō’s first performance as the Courtesan of Eguchi since 1997. Please enjoy this version performed in full costume with fantastic stage design.
