Kabuki is one of Japan’s traditional performing arts that is also widely appreciated by theatre lovers around the world. This is a wonderful opportunity to see kabuki for the first time and a great way to learn about Japan. The program can be enjoyed by anyone: all age groups, experts and novices, Japanese and international visitors etc. There are different types of plays in kabuki and this program will introduce you to a kabuki dance drama. Just sit back and enjoy the performance on stage accompanied by the beautiful live music in this historic building.

The Minamiza Theatre is situated in Kyoto where kabuki originated, and has a history of over 400 years.
We explain the knowledge needed to enjoy kabuki, one of Japan’s traditional performing arts, and highlights of the program humourously to you.
Please also enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Minamiza Theatre, which was registered as one of tangible cultural properties of Japan, as a playhouse.

STORY :

This dance is a scene from Imoseyama Onna Teikin, a masterpiece by Chikamatsu Hanji first presented in 1771, which is an epic taken from early Japanese history, weaving together history, legend and myth.
The country chafes under the domination of the dictator Iruka, but he is magically invulnerable and can only be killed by a weapon carrying the blood of a sacred deer and the blood of a living jealous woman. But more than a supernatural political tale, this is a play of love, sacrifice and human tragedy.
Omiwa, the daughter of a saké shop, is in love with Motome, the handsome young man that lives next door, unaware that he is actually a court noble living in disguise while the evil minister Iruka is in power.
