Minamiza Theatre (at KYOTO) Theatre Information

This is a special performance featuring Ichikawa Ebizō who will succeed to the name of Ichikawa Danjūrō Hakuen in May 2020. ‘Hagoromo’ is a dance adapted from a Nō play based on the legend of an angel’s mantle of feathers. It is a work of magical beauty and profundity with Nakamura Kotarō as the heavenly maiden. This will be followed by a performance of ‘Kanjinchō’ which will be the last time Ichikawa Ebizō acts under that name. This very popular kabuki play was first performed in March, 1840 at the Kawarasakiza Theatre in Edo (the old name for Tokyo) by Ichikawa Danjūrō VII and was later refined by Ichikawa Danjūrō IX.

The head retainer Benkei claims they are soliciting contributions for the rebuilding of a temple, but the barrier guard Togashi insists that, if so, they must have the temple's book of solicitation. Benkei elaborately improvises the text with an empty scroll. When one soldier points out that one of the group resembles Yoshitsune, Benkei is forced to strike Yoshitsune with his staff. Togashi is convinced that they are the fugitives but, sympathizing with Benkei's loyalty, he tells them to proceed on their way.
