STORY :
The priest Shunkan and two noblemen, Naritsune and Yasuyori, plotted against the Heike, but the coup d'état (known as the Shishigatani incident) failed and they were exiled to the remote island of Kikai Ga Shima. Kiyomori makes advances to Shunkan's wife Azumaya, but she preserves her chastity by committing suicide. As the wife of Emperor Takakura, Kiyomori's daughter Tokuko becomes pregnant, and Kiyomori grants an amnesty in the hope that the empress will have an easy delivery. Shunkan is also included in the amnesty and a boat arrives on the island to take them back to the capital. Hearing that his wife has died, however, he gives up his place on the boat to freedom so that Naritsune's new wife Chidori can accompany her husband back to the capital. Shunkan resolves to stay on the island.
In return for sparing the life of her son Ushiwakamaru, the lascivious Kiyomori has made Tokiwa Gozen, the widow of Minamoto no Yoshitomo whom he destroyed in battle, his concubine. It is rumoured that Tokiwa Gozen nightly takes a man into Shushaka Palace, where she lives, avoiding the observation of Kiyomori who lies ill in bed. On top of that, Ushiwakamaru, who was to become a priest under the care of Kurama-dera Temple, has disappeared. At the same time, a girl named Fuetake begins to serve at the Shushaka Palace.
The warrior Saitō Sanemori is ordered to investigate the Shushaka Palace. He once served the Genji clan but now serves the Heike, so he is coincidently in the same situation as Tokiwa Gozen who once married a Genji warrior and is now a concubine of a Heike warrior. Sanemori is ordered to investigate her real intentions, and at the same time, the Heike intend to test Sanemori's loyalty.
Sanemori has a daughter named Hinazuru born between him and a woman of the Genji, whom he divorced when he parted company with the Genji. Hinazuru is heading for the capital to see her father Sanemori, although she cannot recognize him as she parted from him in her infancy. Without knowing that, Sanemori disguises himself as a townsman and comes to the Shushaka Palace to investigate Tokiwa Gozen. Then...
