A new lineup for KABUKI ON DEMAND – “SUKEROKU YUKARI NO EDO ZAKURA”, “KURUWA BUNSHŌ” and “YOSHITSUNE SENBON ZAKURA” from November 1st!

On November 1st, 2023, KABUKI ON DEMAND will add “SUKEROKU YUKARI NO EDO ZAKURA”, “KURUWA BUNSHŌ” and “YOSHITSUNE SENBON ZAKURA” (with English secondary audio guides) to its lineup.

The official online streaming service exclusively for kabuki, is now available in these 10 countries and regions: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Taiwan, the U.K. and the U.S. Each video provides either English secondary audio guides or subtitles for worldwide fans to experience the allure of kabuki abroad.

SUKEROKU YUKARI NO EDO ZAKURA 
[‘Sukeroku, the Flower of Edo’]

This is a masterpiece representing the chic and sumptuous world of Edo Kabuki. Sukeroku, a chivalrous townsman, is played by Ichikawa Danjūrō XII, and his lover, the courtesan Agemaki, is played by Bandō Tamasaburō. This production was a hot topic of conversation at the Kabukiza Theatre in April 2010.


KURUWA BUNSHŌ 
[‘Love Letters from the Pleasure Quarters’]

This is a representative work of Kamigata kabuki (kabuki from the Kamigata region, around Kyoto and Osaka) where the love between a man and a woman takes center stage. The “Golden couple” of Kataoka Nizaemon and Bandō Tamasaburō will play the roles of the young master of the Fujiya, Izaemon, and the courtesan of the Ōgiya, Yūgiri.


YOSHITSUNE SENBON ZAKURA
[‘Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees’]

Known as one of the three great classics of the kabuki repertoire, this is a popular and heartwarming scene depicting the love between parent and child foxes. The fox Genkurō is played by Onoe Kikugorō, and the scene includes quick-changes of role and costume and exciting performance techniques unique to kabuki.
