Special Exhibition at the Kabukiza Gallery & Kabukiza Hall: “This is KABUKI: Explore the Magic of Traditional Japanese Culture and Performance”

The special exhibition, “This is KABUKI: Explore the Magic of Traditional Japanese Culture and Performance” will be held at the Kabukiza Gallery & Kabukiza Hall on the 5th floor of the Kabukiza Tower from Wednesday, October 1 to Sunday, November 16, 2025.

This exhibition is a hands-on introduction to the diverse world of Kabuki through one of its Three Great Masterpieces, Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura, which will also be staged at the Kabukiza in October. By experiencing this exhibition and attending the full-length performance of Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura, you can deepen your understanding of the play and of Kabuki itself.

The main highlight of the exhibition is a recreation of the magnificent “Yoshinoyama” stage, which will appear inside the Kabukiza Hall. Created by the skilled artisans of the Kabukiza stagecraft team, this installation allows visitors to explore the stage and see the craftsmanship up close. You can also hold actual props from the play and take photos and videos as if you were a Kabuki actor. Additionally, photo spots featuring the “Tokaiya” paper umbrella and the large anchor from “Daimotsunoura” are available. With so many engaging areas, this exhibition is a must-see for everyone from Kabuki newcomers to devoted fans.

What’s more, for a limited time during the exhibition, a set of three original kabuki actor prints depicting the premiere of Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura in Edo in May 1748 will be publicly displayed for the very first time! Don’t miss this rare opportunity to travel back in time to the play’s beginning.

Please note that some exhibits will be rotated during the exhibition period to protect the artworks, .
