Actors of the younger generation perform a masterpiece by Chikamatsu Monzaemon and a dance play in each of the two programs, bringing extra color to spring in Kyoto at the Minamiza Theatre.
Each program begins with a 'Stage Announcement and Program Guide', followed in the Pine Program by a typical 'wagoto' play depicting the love of an ordinary man in a soft and emotional acting style typical of the Kamigata region (the area around Kyoto and Osaka). In the Cherry Program the popular domestic play 'The Woman Killer and the Hell of Oil' will be performed. In both the Pine and Cherry programs this is followed by the dance play 'Masakado', each featuring a different cast.

Not being able to take this any longer, his mother finally disowns him. Troubled by this, and needing to pay back the debts, he tries to borrow money from the wife of a neighboring oil merchant. He tries to blackmail her, but when he is rejected, he ends up killing her.
