Minamiza Theatre (at KYOTO) Theatre Information

Based on the original work by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, Sonezaki Shinjū was reborn as a new kabuki play (“Shin-saku Kabuki”) in 1953. Now, for the first time in 73 years, the story of Sonezaki Shinjū is presented with a fresh new vision. Based on a real-life double suicide that occurred during the Genroku era, this ultimate love story poignantly portrays a man and a woman who remain faithful to their singular, devoted love.

After a happy chance reunion during the Kannon Pilgrimage, their joy quickly fades. Tokubē is swindled out of a significant sum of money by his friend Kuheiji. To make matters worse, he is publicly humiliated and branded a fraud in front of a crowd.
That night, Kuheiji arrives at the Tenmaya and begins to slander Tokubē mercilessly. Ohatsu, knowing that Tokubē is hiding beneath the veranda, asks him if he is prepared to prove his innocence with his life. Through a silent signal, Tokubē conveys his unwavering resolve, and the two decide to end their lives together. Under cover of the silent night, they hold hands, cross the Umeda Bridge, and head toward the forest of Sonezaki, their hearts fixed on the Pure Land.
