Celebrate the New Year in the midst of the festive bustle of Asakusa with a gala selection of plays and dances featuring the most talented young stars in kabuki today. Compared to other kabuki performances, the length of each show is shorter, the tickets are sold at very reasonable prices and there is also a cheerful event where you can watch kabuki in kimono. The program is perfect for tourists and customers who have never seen kabuki before.

STORY :
This play is one act from a jidaimono history play set in the 12th century. Some Taira generals are visiting the Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū Shrine in Kamakura. Rokurodayū and his daughter Kozue go there to sell a sword. The Taira general Kajiwara is asked to test the sharpness of the sword by slicing two live human beings in half. The sword is a priceless heirloom belonging to the enemy Genji clan, and he deliberately fails the test in order to keep it from falling into the hands of his Taira clan. Though he himself is now a member of the Taira, Kajiwara reveals that his true feelings are with the Genji. Finally, he demonstrates the true power of the sword by cutting a large stone basin in two.

In the grand hall of a noble household, two graceful princesses dance elegantly, describing the beauty of the changing seasons and the fleeting emotions of a woman lost in love. Holding red and white lion masks, they chase after butterflies and suddenly vanish without a trace. Before long, the two princesses reappear, now transformed into the spirits of lions. Amidst a sea of blooming peonies, they display the fierce and majestic movements of the lion, the king of beasts.
FUJI MUSUME
A beautiful maiden in a black lacquered hat, holding a branch of wisteria flowers over her shoulder, stands under wisteria flowers that hang from a big pine tree. She is, in reality, the spirit of the wisteria plant. In dance, she expresses the feelings of a woman in love. Then she compares the man she likes to a pine tree, and becomes slightly intoxicated from drinking saké. Finally, evening approaches and she must depart.

STORY :
A scene from Chikamatsu Monzaemon's play 'Keisei Hangonkō', famous for its depiction of a couple's love in the face of adversity. Matahei has long studied painting, but because of his stutter, his master has refused to give him an artistic name. As a result, instead of being a respected artist, Matahei is forced to make a living drawing crude cartoons. Matahei and his wife come to beg his teacher for an official name once more, but when their request is turned down they decide that suicide is the only choice. Before dying, Matahei paints his portrait on a stone washbasin, and such is the strength of his spirit that the painting permeates through the stone and appears on the other side. Finally, Matahei receives a name and is overjoyed to be able to serve his teacher with valor.

STORY :
The original 'Musume Dōjōji'' is based on the legend of a woman who transformed into a serpent out of jealousy, and destroyed the temple bell that hid the man she loved. In that version, the woman changes her costume repeatedly while depicting various kinds of love through dance. In this version, however, there are two dancers, one of which is eventually revealed to be a man in disguise. The two portray the romantic feelings of a loving couple. The dance reaches its climax when the two reveal their true characters.
