THEATER MILANO-Za (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo)

Kabuki comes to Kabukichō!
Kabukichō in Shinjuku was named in 1945 as a part of the post-war reconstruction project to attract kabuki theatres to the area, and has developed as a centre of entertainment. Although no theatre was built at the time, kabuki will be performed at the THEATER MILANO-Za in the 'Tokyu Kabukicho Tower' on its first anniversary in May 2024!
First performed will be 'SHŌFUDATSUKI KONGEN KUSAZURI', which showcases the boldness and the flamboyance of a Soga dance. The kabuki dance 'RYŪSEI' is full of wittiness and sophistication, in which the four members of the 'Thunder' family are danced by a single actor. Lastly, we have the brand new kabuki play, 'FUKU KANAU KAMI NO KOIBANA'. Based on the rakugo story of "Binbō Gami" (The God of Poverty), it features a cast of highly individualistic characters.
Nakamura Kankurō and Nakamura Shichinosuke, who inherited the legacy of their father, Nakamura Kanzaburō XVIII, are leading the Nakamura-ya family at a young age. Together with energetic young kabuki actors such as Nakamura Toranosuke, Nakamura Kantarō, Nakamura Chōzaburō and Nakamura Tsurumatsu, they will create a new breeze blowing through the Shinjuku Kabukichō area!

STORY :

SHŌFUDATSUKI KONGEN KUSAZURI
A short dance in the oldest style of kabuki, leisurely and full of humor, combining the charm of an onnagata female role specialist with the larger-than-life heroism of the bombastic aragoto style of acting. The strong woman Maizuru stops the powerful, but rash, warrior Soga no Gorō from rushing to a fight by pulling on the set of armor he is carrying.

RYŪSEI
In mythology, the heavenly shepherd boy and the celestial weaver maid can only meet once a year. Just as they come together again, the "shooting star", or "ryūsei" appears with an urgent report. This actually turns out to be a story of marital discord in the family of the thunder god who lives in a poor tenement in heaven. This is the highlight of the dance in which the dancer changes instantly from role to role, playing the thunder god, his angry wife, his little son and the elderly thunder goddess from next door who tries to break up the fight.

Performance Time: To be announced

FUKU KANAU KAMI NO KOIBANA

['Gods Talk about Love bringing Happiness']

CAST :
Obin, a goddess of poverty
Nakamura Shichinosuke
Tatsugorō, a carpenter
Nakamura Toranosuke
Sukanpin, a god of poverty
Nakamura Kankurō
STORY :

The carpenter Tatsugorō who lives in a rear tenement in Edo (the old name for Tokyo) is always drinking and does not go to work. One day, as he is taking an afternoon nap, the goddess of poverty appears at his bedside and tells him in a lecture to work harder. She says this because she absorbs the power of humans working hard throughout their lives, turning it into nourishment. Worried that he will not be able to pay for the rent, she begins a side job. The hard working goddess of poverty gets along well with residents of the tenement house. Sukanpin, an elder god of poverty, advises her not to commit herself further to human life, but she turns a deaf ear to his advice…
