The first performance of this year at the Shinbashi Enbujō Theatre is ‘Ebizō Kabuki’ by the troupe lead by Ichikawa Ebizō.
The program begins with a dance celebrating the coming of spring, followed by one of The ‘Eighteen Favourite Kabuki Plays’ associated with the Danjūrō line of actors. It ends with two dances by Ebizō, his daughter and his son entitled ‘New Year’s gift.’
Please come to see ‘Ebizō Kabuki’ in which brilliant and colorful works suitable for the New Year are performed.
HARU NO SHIRABE MUSUME NANAKUSA
[ 'The Soga Brothers and the Seven Spring Herbs' ]
CAST :

- Nakamura Kotarō
- Soga no Jūrō
- Nakamura Kazutarō
STORY :
In the Edo period, every New Year plays were staged about the medieval vendetta carried out by the Soga brothers Jūrō and Gorō. This colorful, old-fashioned dance mixes this tradition with that of eating porridge containing seven auspicious herbs on the seventh day of the New Year.
As the brothers Jūrō and Gorō prepare to face their father's murderer and take revenge, they cut the herbs together with beautiful Shizuka Gozen, as a symbolic act of vengeance.
Intermission: 25 minutes

STORY :
A princess has a mysterious ailment that makes her hair stand on end, and this prevents her from going ahead with her long-awaited marriage. Kumedera Danjō comes from the groom's household to investigate and, when his tweezers mysteriously float up in mid-air, he discovers a secret plot.
This is one of 'The Eighteen Favorite Kabuki Plays'. This collection mostly features plays with the bombastic 'aragoto' style of acting, but 'Kenuki' is an urbane, witty detective story that unfolds in a world of fantasy. It displays the spirit of early kabuki.
Intermission: 30 minutes
FUJI MUSUME
[ 'The Wisteria Maiden' ]
CAST :
- The spirit of wisteria
- Ichikawa Botan
STORY :
A beautiful maiden in a black lacquered hat, holding a branch of wisteria flowers over her shoulder, stands under wisteria flowers that hang from a big pine tree. She is, in reality, the spirit of the wisteria plant. In dance, she expresses the feelings of a woman in love. Then, she compares the man she likes to a pine tree, and becomes slightly intoxicated from drinking saké. Finally, evening approaches and she must depart.
HASHI BENKEI
[ 'Benkei on the Gojō Bridge' ]
CAST :
- Musashibō Benkei
- Ichikawa Ebizō
- Ushiwakamaru
- Horikoshi Kangen
STORY :
This dance re-enacts the first meeting of two of Japan's most legendary figures. Late at night on the Gojō Bridge in Kyoto, Musashibō Benkei, who is known for his bravery, ambushes a boy because he has heard he is very skilled in swordsmanship. Judging from the way the boy dodges his halberd's blow, he realizes that the boy is Ushiwakamaru (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune) and eventually submits to the boy's power. This light and powerful dance was adapted from the Nō original based on this historical meeting.
