Shinbashi Enbujo Theatre (at TOKYO) Theatre Information
"Lord of the Lies" ("Oboro no Mori ni Sumu Oni") was first performed in 2007 as a collaboration between Shochiku and the Shinkansen theatre troupe, with Ichikawa Somegorō (now Matsumoto Koshirō) playing the role of Rai. At the time, the production was met with great acclaim and enthusiastic support. Now, this masterpiece makes its much-anticipated return as 'Kabuki NEXT'.
'Kabuki NEXT', which was founded with the aim of pushing kabuki beyond its boundaries, presents its highly awaited second installment. This time, it is a new rendition of "Lord of the Lies", a story of a man ruled by lies and desire, inspired by Shakespeare’s classic "Richard III". The production features unique kabuki-style direction and music, offering a fresh take on the tale.
Please look forward to how Nakashima Kazuki and Inoue Hidenori team up with kabuki actors to create this new vision of "Lord of the Lies".

STORY :
We find ourselves in a mysterious forest, where old gods reside.
From a towering heap of corpses emerges a man—his name is Rai.
His eyes gleam with the wild ambition of a beast, and his weapon is his "silver tongue," spinning endless lies in pursuit of his dream to rise to the top.
Suddenly, the forest demons known as Oboro appear before Rai, offering him the throne in exchange for his life. With a prophecy and a sword that moves as smoothly as his tongue, Rai sets off toward the capital.
What will be the outcome of his insatiable ambition?
And what will Rai see at the end of his blood-stained dream?
