This month's program is called 'Shūzan-sai' (the Shūzan Festival). Shūzan was the pen name of Nakamura Kichiemon I, and 'Shūzan-sai' will be held to honor his outstanding artistry and talent.
In the Matinee, a masterpiece concerning the truth behind the love of a young second wife for her son-in-law, and a work adapted from the magnificent world of the novelist Yumemakura Baku which was much talked about will be performed. In the Evening Show, please enjoy a history play depicting tragic love during a political coup d’état, and a typical 'aragoto' play which is a masterpiece of the 'Eighteen Favorite Kabuki Plays'.

STORY :
Tamate Gozen has fallen in love with her stepson Shuntokumaru, and follows him when he runs away to the retreat of her father Gappō. Tamate had tricked Shuntokumaru into drinking poisoned saké which disfigured his face, after which he fled with his fiancée to Gappō’s retreat. Unable to bear seeing his daughter make advances to Shuntokumaru, Gappō stabs her. With her dying breath, Tamate begins to tell the unexpected truth behind her love… This play is known as a unique masterpiece portraying a young second wife’s love for her stepson.

STORY :
The monk Kūkai, who traveled from Japan to Tang Dynasty China to study Buddhism, arrives at Changan where he shows Gyokuren his magical powers and astonishes people there at the brothel. As Kūkai walks around Changan with Tachibana no Hayanari, he encounters an old man who sells suspicious gourds. Kūkai penetrates his magic, which others were unable to do. The old man asks Kūkai what he came for and Kūkai answers that he has come to steal the esoteric religion. The old man Tan'ō finds him interesting and gives him weird gourds. In Changan a strange happening occurs every night: a signboard mysteriously appears on which is written that 'the Emperor passes away, and so will the next Emperor.' Kūkai visits a mansion, which is rumored to be haunted by a monster cat, to solve this mystery and encounters Shunkin there with a black cat on her head. He visits the grave of the beauty Yōkihi who should have been buried 50 years before, accompanied by the poet Hakurakuten and...
Please enjoy this entertaining story set in a world of beauty and fantasy, originally written by Yumemakura Baku and first performed in 2016.

STORY :
Dazai Yakata Hana Watashi ['Giving Cherry Blossoms at Dazai's Mansion']
Soga no Iruka has forced the Emperor to abdicate the throne and has become a fearful tyrant. He loves Lady Uneme whom the Emperor favored, and visits Dazai's mansion, to which he summons the Attorney General Kiyozumi and Dazai's widow Sadaka to search for her. He suspects that Sadaka and Kiyozumi are feigning enmity towards each other to shelter her. He demands that Sadaka present her daughter Hinadori as his concubine, and demands that Kiyozumi has his son Koganosuke attend the court, saying that they must behead their children if they do not comply with his request. He hands them branches of cherry blossom.
Yoshinogawa ['Yoshino River']
The mansion of the Attorney General, who is master of the Kii domain, and the villa of the Dazai clan, which rules the Yamato domain, lie on opposite banks of the Yoshino River. Koganosuke, son of the attorney general, and Hinadori, Dazai's daughter, love each other, but they cannot meet as the parents of both families are arguing with each other. Both Kiyozumi and the widow Sadaka return from Dazai's mansion, to which Soga no Iruka had summoned them. Though they are on bad terms, both Kiyozumi and Sadaka intend to spare the child of their opponent, sacrificing their own. They send a signal which had been previously arranged by them, and…

STORY :
Disguised as traveling priests, the fugitive general Yoshitsune and his band of retainers are stopped at a road barrier. The head retainer Benkei claims they are soliciting contributions for the rebuilding of a temple, but the barrier guard Togashi insists that, if so, they must have the temple's book of solicitation. Benkei elaborately improvises the text with an empty scroll. When one soldier points out that one of the group resembles Yoshitsune, Benkei is forced to strike Yoshitsune with his staff. Togashi is convinced that they are the fugitives but, sympathizing with Benkei's loyalty, he tells them to proceed on their way.
